Hexie Rings
Little Pleasures...
I'm always fond of English Paper Piecing, and these are manageably quick and satisfying small doodads in all the right ways
You need 12 papers (actually, thin card is essential, or you can use S80 Vilene, in which case the end product is washable...)
I used 1-inch and 5/8 inch (that's the measurement of a side) hexagons for these samples. The little ones were all nice and white both sides, but I cut the bigger ones from recycled card. Note that the printed side is best facing inwards, or you might see odd details through your fabrics...
For the bigger sample I tacked through the papers to hold the fabric on, making sure that the knots faced the outsides. As the small ones used a shiny gold fabric, I tacked these entirely underneath and left the stitching in
The gold fabric can mark when you take the tackings out...
Normally I would sew the hexies Right Sides Together, oversewing with a fine thread for neatness, but as these cannot be finished from the inside, I used a pretty variegated thread doubled in my needle, over-sewing from the outside. Sew 6 hexies into a ring. Sew the other 6 into another ring. Place back to back and sew all round inside and outside matching everything neatly
Lastly, take out the tacking stitches where they are on the outsides
Catch a cord or a ribbon at the top as you sew
Side 2 of the little one...
And, maybe, fussy-cutting? (Ask Mrs Google, when you have an hour to spare) And other shapes? Stars?...
