Now What? - Switch Projects
You made a sample, or a little quiltlet to show your Group, and now you need to do something with it. Me, I have no wall space left, so hanging things up is not an option; your mileage, as they say, may vary...
I took a little square sample, and made the obvious choice - a cushion.
I chose a toning green fabric for the back, and a suitable nylon zip
I wanted to preserve the nice binding, so I unpicked the hand-stitching from the back...
I cut two (rather generous, you could be meaner) pieces for the back, each a bit bigger than half the cushion
Press one long edge (right side out) about 1/2 inch wide, and the long on the other piece about 1 inch wide
Pin the zip to the 1/2-inch-pressed side, aligning the folded edge neatly with the teeth of the zip but not allowing any fabric to overlap
In the middle...
Put the zip foot on your machine (not sure which this is? ask your manual)
Set the needle (or the foot) so that the sewing is on the right
Sew all the way along the folded edge as close as possible to the zip. I have used a contrast thread so you can see it, but matching is neater, of course
Sew along again, making sure to catch the edge of the zip. This stops it rolling under and jamming in use
Pin the other side of the back so that the fold hides the zip, making sure that you keep the whole thing so that it will still open...
Sew again, close to the zip, then mark each end with a sideways pin just past the metal ends
Being careful not to hit the metal bits, sew down each end of the fold, then across, and alongside the first row of stitching to hold down the zip tape as before
Your zip shoud now be nicely concealed like so...
I laid the completed back face down, and pinned the front onto it, making sure that the unfolded binding was not caught. Stitched all the way round...
Trim the excess backing
And sew down the binding again to cover the seam
Stuffed and appreciated...
Note - if you are wanting a plain edge to your cushion, or you can't be bothered with the rebinding thing, put the front and back parts Right Sides Together and don't forget to open your zip a little before you sew around...
