OUT AND ABOUT...

Spring seems to have sprung, and despite the cold winds the sunshine has uplifted us both nicely. HB was showing and had a stand at the Newmarket Quilt Show, and HH spent a merry Saturday "helping" (actually, looking at fabric, some of which somehow snuck into her bag...) HB's display quilts got a lovely reaction and the stand was both fun and profitable. We spoke to lots of old and new friends and have had some teaching and speaking enquiries. It's really noticeable that people seem to be looking for new ideas and patterns and kits, and inspirations... Then we took the Roadshow the following weekend to the Region 8 Day in Capel St Mary - HH did her talk in the morning and then a room-full of happy students made embroidered wool brooches in the afternoon. And they bought stuff, played with the quilts, asked all manner of interesting questions, and were just great fun... it's just so nice to get Out and About and saying hello to people...

And the new Newmarket venue is fantastic - lots of lovely light and space and altogether so much more civilised...

We have a couple of exhibition listings this time - don't forget that we are always happy to list your textile exhibitions here - you need to send details to us before the start of the month, please! And an image...

TAKE A LOOK

pat pauly at foq Here we go again! Festival of Quilts (FOQ) tickets are on sale now; workshop bookings are open and quilt entry forms are available. It's time to plan your visit and get your forms in. You will be surprised to hear that we are already working on our quilts! Usually we end up declaring a size and title and then make a quilt to match. This year we are being a bit more proactive. I expect it will all come down to the last minute as usual.

Pat Pauly's blog is endlessly inspiring (HH writes) and I have done an online class with her which was delightful. She will have a gallery at FOQ and I'm really looking forward to meeting her work in person
hanten switch Instead of a themed category at FOQ this year, The Quilters' Guild have asked visitors to show off their patchwork garments - wearable art!

As it happens, this plays nicely into our new SWITCH theme where we give you ideas on how to switch a quilt's purpose. Click on the image to visit the MAQ SWITCH INSPIRATIONS page and see how HB switched a bedquilt into a jacket with the aid of her HANTEN pattern.

DON'T PANIC! If you don't have a quilt to "Switch", the pattern includes instructions for making patchwork panels for the jacket.
delta diamonds QUILTS UK is on at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th May.

Both HH and HB have quilts in the competition this year, our first time in the show - do have a look out for them.

HB and partner, Martin (aka The Quilter's Apprentice) will be trading at the show (stand 175) so swing by, say "Hi" and see what's new in the patterns and kits department
1 metre hobo bag In addition to wearing comfortable shoes, carrying plenty of water and making sure your phone is fully charged so you can take lots of photos, a capacious bag is very important for all those "just had to have" purchases. Of course it is even nicer if you have made the bag yourself!

Left is a link to the One Yard Hobo Bag on one of our favourite blogs, SEW CAN SHE, which is simple yet roomy. If you fancy making something a bit more... well,... fancy, the photos below link to a couple of patterns for bags by HH and HB.

NOTE: although seemingly ideal, many venues will not allow you to carry a rucksack!

The MARKET SQUARE bag shown left is now amongst HH's free patterns - could this be just the one you need?

I WISH I'D MADE THAT

apple core wish

This very modern take on an Apple Core quilt is called 100 DAYS OF APPLE CORES by Cassandra. We found on a roll of the QUILTCON quilts.

The link takes you to Cassandra's blog, THE (NOT SO) DRAMATIC LIFE, and includes an excellent photo sequences of her colour choices and how she arranged the pieces to get that amazing gradation of colour - absolutely fascinating.
