MODERN MEDALLIONS

Many years ago (HH writes) when I was but a novice quilter (despite having sewn since before I could read, and that around the age of two, I came rather late to the layers-and-wadding game) I took part in a Round Robin exchange. We made middles, sent them along to the next person with fabrics and notes, and eventually, having added to several other people's Medallion Quilts, got our own back. It taught me two very valuable lessons, the first being that no-one reads the instructions nearly carefully enough ("no white, please" I said. Resulting quilt 80% white... Sigh) and secondly that a quilt made by a committee may not be the best way to proceed... (And, by the bye, and as it was so not to my taste, it was donated very quickly..)

However, there is something jolly nice about making a Medallion. Start with an interesting centre, complement it with rounds of different styles, and the result can be just delicious... And, if you really find one sort of block tedious, it's only one round, after all...

I'm currently making two versions of my "Modern Jazz" (see the link below for the pattern) in Traditional (ish) fashion, one dark, one light, and with my customary rainbows. There will be a pattern for these, too, of course.

They are going to Festival of Quilts, along with all sorts of other good things (almost all mostly finished, honestly) and perhaps we will see you there - we will be attending on the Saturday and Sunday and will be delighted to meet you along the way...

Revisiting the ever-popular blog, A QUILTERS TABLE. Here Debbie shares a series of quilts-in-progress, all from The Seattle Modern Quilt Guild. These medallion quilts, many of which share common blocks thanks to the group's monthly "borders" challenge, are all so different and show perfectly how different a quilt can look just by changing the colour arrangement. Our particular favourite is the first one with the radiating rainbow of colours.
This Minimal Medallion appears on Cynthia Muir's blocg, AHHQUILTING, and is a very modern take on what can quite often be a very traditional quilt layout. Medallion quilts, by their very nature, tend to be a series of borders surrounding a large central block - since the Modern Quilt aesthetic generally precludes borders this presents a challenge. Cynthia's medallion quilt certainly seems to bridge the gap between traditional and modern.
GATHERED claims to be a website for makers and encourages you to discover your next crafting project. It includes all sorts of tutorials and information on various crafts and is well worth surfing around for a while. This Modern Medallion Quilt pattern by Lynne Goldsworthy is included in their FREE QUILT PATTERNS along with several other interesting projects.
Jenny of THE LILAC CAT is well known to many of us through her work with the charity, Siblings Together. Here on her own blog Jenny has shared a lovely medallion quilt, with links to the pattern, called Girt by the Sea – two simple blocks create stunning borders round the central block. This is particularly interesting because it shows a medallion where all the concentric borders are made to the same design which is quite unusual. Jenny has also included another medallion by prolific 'Siblings' quilter, Nicky Eglington, who is skilled at taking unloved or orphan blocks and building a work of beauty around them.
This lovely modern round-robin quilt appears on the blog ONE WEE BIRD. The quilt moved round the group, starting with the centre block, each subsequent member added another border, or round - sometime taxing their ability at mathematics to get their round to fit the pre-existing quilt. A great way of completing a multi-maker quilt.
I know it's not until September, but that will be knocking at the door all too soon!

RISE ABOVE, by Charisma Horton, is a Block of the Month pattern available through ETSY. The choice of colours and asymmetrical design makes for an amazingly modern medallion quilt. Charisma has several interesting modern designs available on Etsy - scroll down the page to view these too.

So hopefully by now you have entered your quilts for Festival and are just finishing the binding and hanging sleeve ready to send them off very soon. Or, like us you are scrambling to finish the quilts and will be putting in some late nights in the next couple of weeks!

Whether you have quilts in the show or not, we hope you will be visiting for a good dose of inspiration and a little dash of retail therapy. We hope to see you there!

These lovely dark stars are the centre of a quilt you will see at Festival: TRAD JAZZ AFTER DARK by Helen Howes - it forms the centre of a medallion quilt.

It's not often you will find us citing each-others quilts in this section, but having watched her make this (HH writes) I do wish I had made this miniature medallion quilt of HB's. This entire quilt is less than 10 inches square and you can meet it in person at Festival of Quilts - look out for the Miniatures Category - blink and you'll miss it!

It's not so much "where do we start?" when we set up a new Pinterest Board, it is more like "when do we stop?".
