June 2022: OUT OF THE DARKNESS

Modern Quilts tend to white grounds, which appeals to some people, but, really, honestly, not to us. We like the darks, the Midnight Blues, the Shaded Blacks (the background of the quilt in the header is black Grunge). Our tendencies lately have been towards the Darkest of Greys, the Bottlest of Greens, and the Maroonest of Reds.. Enlivened, of course, by the cleanest of tone-on-tones and sweetest and most intense of rainbows... No white required! And, of course, darker quilts are much more practical - while I am fond of the clean look of a cream background, it's not the most practical of colours for allowing your 5-year-old to take down the garden and use as a picnic blanket.. Mind you, when Heather and I arrived at Festival of Quilts in 2014 and put a white quilt on the table, the resulting conniption fits were a delight to behold..' Said quilt only got washed last year, and it had been just about everywhere... The darkest of backgrounds will make all colours pop, and your scrappiest of designs can be tied together into a coherent and pleasing whole...

OCEAN STAR: MIDNIGHT by AitchBee. Second in a series of Block of the Month quilts - see below for details of the launch of the next BOM

quadricorn Rainbows are lovely, and we can never find anything to argue against them, but when a dark grid is added they really come to life. This quilt, from the Whistlepig blog, is just delicious, and truly Modern
jewelbox Jewel Box is a traditional pattern which seems always to lean towards the Modern, and this dark version is rich and juicy - Spruce Crafts has a free pattern for you to try - wonderful as a scrappy quilt with a consistent dark background
unbeweavable I love this quilt, despite the name, "Unbeweavable" - there oughta be a law! Pattern available, but I think this is largely for inspiration!
indiogkola We get a regular newsletter from the African Fabric Shop and commonly get led astray by their delicious and authentic and properly-sourced fabrics. These indigo and kola-nut batiks are subtle and desirable.. Sigh, we may have to make an order. Click through for more patterns and do spend some time exploring their website. We are also a bit fond of their Shweshwe prints...
newperspectives AitchBee's latest Block of the Month, NEW PERSPECTIVES, is now officially launched! A series of traditional blocks given modern three dimensional twist. Sign up for twelve months of 3-D fun including bonus instructions every month for the original traditional and a whole set of miniature blocks
terryaske Terry Aske has a graphic sensibility that translates into the most impressive Art Quilts... This spiralling rainbow-of-squares really makes me want to go home and sew...
amish Another traditional pattern with a most modern look, this version of the Amish Pin Wheel pattern from Julie's Creative Ideas blog is accompanied by a nice little tale about its final home
zieman Nancy Zieman's page is largely about quilting with embroidery machines - now, we have a tendency to much simpler machines, and our everyday workhorses are straight-stitch Jukis, but the block she uses for this graphic quilt is a great scrap-buster, so perhaps you might make your own take on this!
atomic This quilt only has the littlest pops of colour, but they bring the whole thing to life. Kathy from Tamarack Shack is a long-arm quilter and she gets lovely quilts in from her customers and shows them on her blog
mountain Leila Gardunia finished her Scrappy Mountain Range quilt, then forgot to take it to the Colorado mountains - read the whole story on her blog with nice details of the quilt...

junpinterestlink We had a lot of fun filling this month's Pinterest page - there is so much to choose from and all of it inspiring!
fragmentation In 2018 HB and I invested in a packet of Heide Stoll-Webber's hand-dyed fabrics, divided them carefully in half, and made a pair of quilts. Not anything like a pair, really, but they have led us, in different ways, to most interesting work... Click on the image to learn more about our quilts.
