MAY 2020: Stripes, stripes all the way!Hello Quilty People! Some of the most popular quilt patterns are basically stripes, think Rail Fence and Chinese Coins. And jelly-roll races... And there is much fun to be had with strips and stripes of an uneven or a regular style. So, I have made a page of book reviews from inspiring makers of a strippy persuasion - CLICK HERE to have a lookAnd the usual Pinterest Page has proved to be astonishingly easy this time - CLICK HERE to see what I found. If you like a more irregular style of strip you will certainly enjoy TIGERS this is a link to my step-by-step tutorial, to make blocks like those in this month's header image. These are great stash-busters and users-of-odd-fabrics... Of course we are always open to contributions - if you would like to offer a free pattern or a book review please do get in touch... HH and AitchBee Contact us direct on newsletter@modernartquilters.co.uk To help you keep in touch with friends and family at the moment we have spent this last few weeks developing a range of fabric postcard kits. This is MIRROR BALL by the incredibly talented quilter, Maria Shell.
If you haven't had a chance to see Maria's work before I would recommend that you click through to her website where she talks about making her own 'patterned' fabric from plains. Yes, unbelievably, all those little stripey sections are pieced not printed. |

Books are a great source of visual inspiration. Not just quilt books, but books on art, architecture, design, history, nature even cookery (it may not bear any resemblance to the actual dish you produce, but the colours in the book's photographs are always amazing to look at!) all can give rise to ideas.
Click on the link to go to our new Book Review page. Have a look at what we have been enjoying recently. |

This is TIGER TIGER by Helen Howes
The original version of this quilt was designed by Helen for OAKSHOTT FABRICS Click on the picture to go to the tutorial for this block on Helen's website. Since originally designing the block, Helen must have made thousands of them, they are always a popular choice for demonstrations and make great group quilts since the block is trimmed after making so they can all be cut to a consistent size. |

Anyone who knows me will know that I hate wasting fabric! I have got a bit of a thing about 1 inch wide strips, several of my designs are based on 1 inch strips, every now and then I will spend a peaceful and mindless afternoon cutting one inch strips from my scrap box, it's very therapeutic.
This little purse or pencil case (depending on which way you join it) is a case in point. Quilt as you go with 1 inch strips it is just one of a number of tutorials on my website including the promised 'Adding a Border' tutorial. |
