SAILING AWAY...

It's past the Equinox, the nights draw in, time to find the Big Armchair and the fire and the little basket of paper pieces and the hand-sewing needles... Or, if you are travelling about, it's so nice to have a little project in a pencil-case with everything you need to play...

Like many of you, we started with hexagons. Now, these are all very well and compulsive, but there is more to English Paper Piecing than six-sided tesselations. HB has been playing with tiny hexies on hats, and HH has been sailing her Boat Race (see above and below) quilts around the scrappy harbour... And, of course, the delights include accuracy, easy non-specific seam-allowances, and raiding the scrap boxes.

TAKE A LOOK

coffin papers We regularly include LINA PATCHWORK on our website because we both love her range of pre-cut paper shapes for EPP. Always accurate and perfectly cut, they really take the faff out of the whole process. HB recently invested in a couple of packs of quarter-inch hexagons (seriously small!) but hasn't dared tackle them yet!

The asymmetrically elongated hexagons shown in the image, left, are a traditional shape known as coffin patch - how very appropriate for the spooky season!
Basics part 2 The Basics Part 2: CHOOSING FABRICS

Continuing our series for Beginners, HH has written an article on choosing fabrics. Even if you are an experienced sewist, you might find a few pearls of wisdom therein, please feel free to have a look - it's always good to pick up a tip to two.
Ashmead Hexiform The best way to describe Hexiform is to take a quote directly from ASHMEAD'S website:
Hexiform is an alternative to the paper or card that is usually used in 'English Paper Piecing'. Unlike paper or card, Hexiform is not removed - it remains in place to give quality form and finish. Hexiform is fully washable, so there is no problem leaving it in.

They also describe succinctly how the shapes are measured in EPP:
We always measure the side-length of our shapes - never side-to-side or point-to-point. That way you know, for instance, that a 1" hexagon will fit with a 1" diamond, a 1" square, etc.."
HH Hexagon Book Kit FLOWER GARDEN. A new book kit from HH incorporating both hand and machine sewing. Available in two colourways.
Scattered Thoughts As this spectacular Summer cools into a mellow Autumn and thoughts turn to cosy quilts and warm firesides, Jamie of SCATTERED THOUGHT OF A CRAFTY MOM has done a round up of Halloween themed quilts for you to marvel at and, perhaps, try?
