One Big Block...

bigstarquiltdark
I just love the sort of over-sized and extra-bold one-block quilts which have been around recently.. I made this one a few years ago and it lives in my sewing room, keeping my back warm on my sewing chair..

I started by cutting eight 9-inch squares of dark Oakshott cottons in various colours, plus the same number of 9-inch squares in one rather exuberant dark batik. Big blocks like these make a showcase for all those big prints, too..

You will get the best results with any blocks like these if there is a deal of contrast, but that doesn't mean that you need to confine yourself to just two fabrics - these are magical in scrappy selections too, or lots of bold solids...

Now, those of you who have an observant nature will have noticed that these are most definitely Half-Square Triangle blocks, and there's already a really good tutorial on this site HERE (Link to pdf file)

Go and look, then make eight pairs of your fabrics, sew, press, and trim to 8-1/2 inches. More blocks or bigger ones, for a bigger quilt. Lay tham out to play with the possibilities, and use your camera!

Sew the blocks into four rows of four, press alternate ways, then sew the rows together. Layer, quilt, bind, enjoy!
