Modern Art Quilters Free Pattern - Jill's Chain
A Variation on a Traditional Theme
I made the quilt shown here for a QGBI Modern Group Challenge - the theme was "20 Squares". The usual way of making these is as English Paper Piecing - that is, fabrics are tacked to papers and over-sewn together. Slow, but accurate and very satisfying. See our EPP Page for the basic how-'tis-dones...
To make this a little more Modern I used lots of neutrals for the outer pieces, and made the 9-patches by machine fairly wonkily, then tacked them over the papers as usual to make the quilt. We made a Pinterest Page HERE with lots of links to how-to's and ideas for these... And, as I think Jack is a Very Dull Boy, this is Jill's Chain

Using the templates - A is the Octagon - tack through the papers for a template this size! - Really good for showcasing fancy fabrics, of course... Use template B if you want a simpler arrangement, or if you want to make wonky 9-patches like mine
Template C is the triangle
Template D is for regular 9-patches - cut nine for each patch
Trace the patterns onto template plastic for ease of making the pieces, and use a thin card for the "papers" for best results...
Be warned, these are addictive...
