Guest Tutorial - Improv Triangles by Sarah Dixon
1 Cut 2 rough squares or rectangles in different colours and lay the smaller one on top of the other with right sides uppermost. You are going to cut a triangle from the middle of the pieces
2 Make a cut from the bottom all the way to the top and move the right hand pieces (A) away. You should have a minimum of 1/2 inch between the start of the cut and the edge of the block
3 Cut the remaining pieces of fabric so that you have a triangle at the right side and an odd shaped piece (B) on the left hand side. Again you should have a minimum of 1/2 inch between the corner of the triangle and the edge of the fabric
4 Swap the triangle pieces from the 2 set of pieces
5 Flip the triangle over to the piece B and sew in place
6 Press open the unit with the seam allowances towards the outer piece
7 Flip the piece A over aligning the edges with the triangle part of the unit you have just sewn, the outer edge will not align at the top but will stick out. Sew in place.
8 Press open
9 Trim the outer edges to make a square or rectangle. I start by lining up my ruler with the bottom of the triangle and work around the block from there
If you only want one block then cut a triangle and place it on top of the background square. Cut in the same way as for the 2 units aligning your ruler with the edges of the triangle, continue from step 5
